A Canada-based senior care platform and medical imaging device manufacturer approached OSP. Nurses can use their medical imaging scanning devices to scan the right heel, left heel, and sacrum region, and the data is collected in the client gateway. Adding the scanned patient data in EHR followed a manual, time-consuming, and error-prone process. The client wanted to replace the manual system through secure EHR integration and automatically send the patient data from the client gateway to EPIC EHR. The EPIC EHR has defined categories for the vital data and has a fixed type of patient vitals that can be added. So, the data scans collected by the scanning device were not allowed to be entered into the vitals API. We needed to solve this challenge to help both systems to share patient data seamlessly.

Understanding the client’s requirements, OSP sketched out a solution to help automate this process. OSP first analyzed the client’s web-based Gateway that collected the medical imaging data and proposed a simple yet effective script for EHR integration through API. OSP developed a customized app on the EPIC server. Hospitals can search on the EPIC marketplace for this app to get a subscription.
We have created another custom application to connect EPIC FHIR with the client gateway. OSP built API for the client gateway to initiate the push request to send the data in JSON format through a custom script. The received data is further rebuilt and reformed.
OSP ensured that the medical imaging data was transferred securely, so we generated a JWT token to get the EPIC FHIR access token. Once the data is sent to the custom script, it is rebuilt and reformed for further verification. The data is verified by processing it towards the patient ID or MRN.
OSP ensured that this whole process was automated. Once the medical imaging data reaches the client gateway through automation, it gets verified and authenticated. Also, we automated the process of extracting the patient IDs from MRN when healthcare organizations only provide MRN. Once the patient ID is verified, the data is added to EPIC FHIR using a clinical note API, and its success or error response is sent back to the client gateway.
